While maintaining close ties with their ancestral hometowns in China, the early Teochew pioneers also actively put down roots and developed in Singapore. They established clan associations, founded schools, and participated widely in the building of local society. With the local Teochew community now primarily composed of second- and third-generation descendants, along with a new wave of immigrants, the structure, identity, and functions of Teochew organisations have been continuously evolving and reshaping.
As a new immigrant of Teochew ancestry, the speaker, Ms Zhang Huimei, has long paid close attention to developments within the Chinese community in Singapore, particularly the history and growth of the Teochew people. Her research interests include qiaopi (correspondence and remittances from overseas Chinese), Teochew associations, and new immigrants. Drawing from personal experience, she will explore how, as an insider, one can observe through participation, reflect through observation, and gain deeper insights into the Chinese immigrant society.
No prior registration is required. All interested parties are welcome to attend the talk before 2:00 PM on the 20th July 2025 at Chui Huay Lim Club, 4th Floor Function Room.
The event is jointly organised by the Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan and Teochew Doctorate Society Singapore, supported by Chui Huay Lim Club.
