Leaders and representatives from the local Teochew and Chinese clan associations,

Ladies and gentlemen,

Good evening.

Tonight, we gather here to celebrate the 93rd anniversary of the Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan. This is our first large-scale physical event after we celebrated the huay kuan’s 90th anniversary three years ago – one that has more than 1,000 guests. I would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to all of you who have come to join us in this significant and joyous celebration, especially those who have travelled from Malaysia and Indonesia.

Over the past 93 years, the huay kuan’s achievements and reputation have been built upon the selfless, cohesive contributions of 46 boards of directors, supported by thousands of members. I am honoured to be elected the president for two consecutive terms from 2019 till 2022. My term of service has been uniquely eventful and challenging as it coincides with the unprecedented pandemic as well as the legal tussle with Ngee Ann Kongsi.

While the pandemic has resulted in physical restrictions, it has also triggered and propelled our innovativeness. We have successfully used technology to conduct a plethora of activities, including the Lunar New Year festivity and the installation of board of directors. In 2021, we employed multimedia technologies and social media tools to organise the 3rd Teochew Festival and the 2nd Miss Teochew Beauty Pageant.  Together with collaborators that included Nam Hwa Opera, China Chaozhou, Jieyang and Shantou’s governments, Teochew International Federation as well as Teochew associations here and overseas, we created a virtual Teochew Village for the festival to offer engaging interactions, through both physical and digital modes. The 10-day event with a comprehensive showcase of the Teochew history and traditions, attracted more than one million online visitors and won commendations from the media.

The pandemic has not inhibited our connections and partnerships with Teochew groups in the other parts of the world. We had exchanged medical supplies with China Chaozhou government, distributed surgical masks to local charities, and raised funds for our Malaysian counterparts, all in the Teochew spirit of lending a helping hand and extending sincere care to one another.

In 2017, the huay kuan held its inaugural Miss Teochew Beauty Pageant. I was the organising chairman then. After the second beauty pageant in 2021, it was apparent that the contestants possess both looks and talents. Thus, the idea was germinated to establish the ladies committee and the Miss Teochew Ambassadress Network. Ms Teo Ser Lee, the ladies committee’s chairperson, is the organising chairperson for this evening’s celebration. Many performance items will be presented by her team as well.

The huay kuan has just established a Teochew football team. The video that will be played later will introduce how the football team was established and how to promote this sport. I hope that the young Teochew people here will actively sign up for the football team.

As for the legal dispute with Ngee Ann Kongsi, it has served as a platform for us to revisit historical facts and retrace the huay kuan’s journey of evolution and progress. It has deepened our knowledge about ourselves and other Teochew clan associations; and that knowledge has become an impetus for us to strive and further improve. I am pleased to share that the five-year-long legal dispute with Ngee Ann Kongsi is likely reaching a settlement, out of court. It is hopeful that the combined efforts and trust will lead to a congenial closure of the matter, just in time before the 46th board of directors completes this term of appointment.

At this juncture, I am happy to announce that our huay kuan will be signing an MOU with Kityang Huay Kwan and Singapore University of Social Sciences to deliver master classes in the subject area of business. This is a milestone following all the other business-related initiatives such as the Teochew Entrepreneur Award, talks on entrepreneurship and mission trips to overseas markets. It signifies yet another transformational strategic action towards enhancing the competitiveness of Teochew businesses. Special thanks to Vice Presidents Dr Lim Boh Soon and Mr Lennon Tan for contributed to this project. At the same time, the huay kuan is also intensively revising its constitution, striving to keep pace with the times.

Over the past four years, the boards of directors have focused on fulfilling the goals of staying united, passing on the traditions and creating a bright future. The tenacious commitment and purposeful determination all aim to strengthen the foundation for huay kuan’s continuous development into the future.

The pandemic has eased and the mediated settlement with Ngee Ann Kongsi looks optimistic. This situation aptly reflects a Chinese metaphor about pushing through the clouds to see the sky. Indeed, perseverance will help us go through darkness to encounter light.

The Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan is at a brand new growth trajectory. The next board of directors will commence from a fresh starting point, with boosted energy to improve operations, amplify our traditions and augment our core values. I wish the future boards of directors steadfast and robust unity so as to attain even more illustrious achievements in the next 90 years.

In conclusion, I would like to thank Union Gas Holdings and Nam Hwa Opera for the tremendous support for this evening’s gala celebration. Thank you, everyone.
